Knowing Where to Tap: Understanding and Leveraging Generative AI in Libraries

Dr. Christopher Harris is the School Library System Director for Genesee Valley (NY) BOCES and a Senior Policy Fellow with the American Library Association. Dr. Harris will discuss ChatGPT, the technology behind it, and the impact it will have on our information seeking practices, approach to education, and other library services. On a larger scale, this is going to change how we understand work in general. In the age of generative AI like ChatGPT, writing an effective prompt that results in high-quality content will be a critical skill. As Dr. Harris will explain, this is about knowing where to tap, and luckily libraries and librarians are well-placed to lead the world through this time of incredible change.

Simple Solutions for Safety

This presentation is about simple steps staff managers and staff members can take to create a safer working environment. Audience:  Management, Frontline Staff, General Staff
Skill level: Beginner
Learning Outcomes: Audience will be able to return to their library with practical tools and ideas to create a safer working environment such as conflict management, space awareness, team communication strategies for unexpected situations, and

OverDrive Collection Management and Reporting

OverDrive continues to grow in popularity with patrons and takes a larger percentage of the collection budget each year. Being in a shared consortium and using Advantage Plus has many benefits, but also adds complexities in managing the collection. This session will review some of these complexities including how weeding or not weeding affects all consortium library patrons; why the OverDrive hold-to-item statistics don't show your specific library district's needs and how to get a better hold-to-item ratio so you can target purchases towards what your library patrons are waiting on; and different ways to analyze the collection and find materials your patrons want including Advanced Search and the new Patron Interest Manager tags. There will be time for everyone to share tips and tricks on how you best manage OverDrive.

Audience: Collection Management staff; Digital Services Staff; Technical Services Staff, Anyone who purchases within OverDrive
Skill level: Beginner to advanced
Learning outcomes: Attendees will be able to understand why weeding is important, how it affects patrons when materials are not weeded, how to set up an automated weeding plan, and what to think about after automated weeding is put into place. Attendees will be able to understand why the OverDrive Advantage Plus hold-to-item ratio does not give a complete picture of a specific library district's needs and how to set up automated carts and analyze the material outside of OverDrive to see the true patron need for a library district. Attendees will be able to use advanced search techniques and purchasing tools to target specific needs of their library. Attendees will be given the opportunity to ask questions and share their own best practices in working with OverDrive.

We'll have time for some hands-on practice as well as a discussion of what's working for you.

Dusting bunnies: Using Sierra reports for collection management

Unless we attend to the details of collection management on a regular basis, database dust bunnies take over. In this session we’ll explore the scope of reporting and maintenance one public library undertakes on a routine basis, using Sierra Create Lists and Global Update. (This does not include the State year-end report.) Participants will receive access to procedures and Create Lists logic they can apply to their own libraries’ needs. Questions and observations are encouraged and will likely reveal additional database maintenance gems.

Audience: Familiarity with Sierra Create Lists & Global Update will be helpful, but if you don't have that come anyway and you'll be introduced to what these functions can do.
Skill level:  Collection and acquisition managers, and those who do Sierra database maintenance in your library
Learning outcomes: Attendees will be able to apply the concepts and procedures at their own libraries to assist with their collection management efforts, and to ensure their physical resources are accurately represented to patrons and staff.
