OverDrive New Databases & Streaming Media Services (Abbey, OverDrive)
Recording

  • OverDrive has been transferring everything over from RBdigital to OverDrive starting with eBooks, eAudiobooks, magazines. Next, the steaming media and databases were transferred and are now available on the Marketplace.
  • All streaming media and databases can be opted into at a consortium level and also at an individual level.
  • Currently, there is no development on LawDepot and Acorn TV. OverDrive is getting close with Craftsy. Contact Abbey Patton if you have any questions.
  • The databases and streaming media can be found from the SHOP drop-down menu on the Marketplace site.
  • OverDrive has two streaming media and database lending models. One is CPC and the other is a subscription.
  • The CPC model includes IndieFlix, Qello Concerts, The Great Courses Library Collection that can be added to your Libby site at no cost.
    • Libraries would determine a maximum monthly budget for each separate service.
    • Unlike the existing CPC where your patrons get access to one title, the service will give them a 7-day pass to the entire collection. When the pass expires they would go to Libby to get another pass.
    • Once they click on the link for the 7-day pass they will be leaving OverDrive and be redirected to the site for the service they are using.
    • The patron will see the information on their Shelf about how many days they have left to access a service. Clicking on the message on the Shelf page for the service will redirect the patron to the hosted content site. All third-party vendors work the same.
  • Another model is a subscription similar to the SU Blackstone Audio collection.
    • The subscription model includes ArtistWorks, Learn It Live, Method Test Prep, and Universal Class.
    • If purchased at a consortium level the subscription price would need to be paid by all the OverDrive members.
    • The price is for unlimited access for 12 months.
    • For the Universal Class subscription, there are unlimited checkouts during that 12 months and patrons will have access for 30 days for each “checkout” and set up an external account to save courses and their progress.
  • Since both types of services are not hosted by OverDrive, if there is an issue with a patron having access to the site, they can open up a technical support case through Libby. The OverDrive support team will be able to liaison with the third-party vendors. You can always contact Abbey if you have not heard anything, but know that she does have limited control in this area.
  • When a user checks out a token, either 7 or 30-day, the extent of the data gathering can be done from OverDrive. OverDrive is measuring the checkouts that come straight from Libby.
  • It is not measuring how much content is accessed. This means that OverDrive only measures the access checkout and not every checkout during the time a token is used.
  • Universal Class will provide a second link on your catalog site that will direct patrons directly to the Marmot Universal Class page so they do not have to go through Libby. In that case, OverDrive does not record that checkout. Universal Class does provide its admin portal to get statistics.
  • IndieFlix is a host of classic and contemporary features, award-winning shorts, film festival favorites, and documentaries from around the world.
  • Qello Concerts world's largest collection of on-demand full-length music performances, concert films, and music documentaries.
  • The Great Courses Library Collection video streaming service is brought to you by The Great Courses—the leading global media brand for lifelong learning and personal enrichment. This collection includes more than 250 courses, led by the world’s top experts, covering a broad range of subjects, such as science, mathematics, philosophy, history, literature, fine arts and music, travel, business, and personal development.
  • ArtistWorks provides players world-class instruction from Grammy Award-winning music professionals. ArtistWorks for Libraries offers users a guided path of video lessons containing everything they need to reach their musical goals.
  • Learn It Live is a place to find and attend live online classes on 200+ topics in health, wellness, and personal development. You can join a live yoga, pilates, or meditation class and interact with an expert on the other side of the globe. Watch one of the 1,000+ recorded classes at any time.
  • Method Test Prep has ACT and SAT prep solutions that are proven to raise scores! Tutoring, classes, and practice tests.
  • Universal Class is the place to continue your education online and fulfill all your lifelong learning goals.
  • Action Item: Tammy will create pricing spreadsheets for all the OverDrive consortium subscription services to gauge interest.

Q&A

  • Q: Can patrons still access their LawDepot accounts if they have created one?
  • A:  The LawDepot subscription has been paused. Once LawDepot is available on OverDrive you will get any past access back for an additional amount of days until your subscription ends. Abbey is unsure if any patron who has an account can still access the service since it would be through their site and not the OverDrive site. You would have to contact their tech support.
  • Q: Can the video CPC titles be found with a title search in Libby/OverDrive?
  • A: No. All the content is hosted on third-party sites so OverDrive is merely the portal to get your patrons from Libby to the content. The patron can search the catalog from the service and create a watchlist.
  • Q: Are those prices for a specific library or universal (for subscription databases like Universal Class)?
  • A: The $2.99 for the CPC is universal, and if you add that at a consortial level or an Advantage level, it will be $2.99 per user. At an Advantage level, you set your budget. At a consortium level that would be a budget that affects the whole consortium. The subscription budgets are all at an individual library level. The prices listed on the Marketplace are the consortium prices based on total annual circulation as reported by libraries to LRS. The Advantage account price would be lower.
  • Q: Are MARC records available for the CPC video collections?
  • A: No. The videos are constantly changing. It is not something that OverDrive hosts so their catalog is completely their own.

Recommend to Library (RTL) Decision

  • The majority of the group decided to move forward with RTL feature with 5 recommendations allowed per month.
  • We will also keep the OverDrive Purchase Request form on the Marmot OverDrive site. We will ask Abbey to change the wording to, “Don’t see the item you’re looking for? Please click here to suggest something else."
  • Action Item: Tammy will contact Abbey to have the plan turned on for the consortium.

Fairness & Equity Subcommittee update

  • It was decided that when we all switched to Advantage Plus sharing that everyone would be sharing.
  • Liz asked the libraries that are not sharing to consider sharing your collection because that is the spirit of a shared collection.
  • If you do not know if you are sharing, please get in touch with Tammy who has a chart of which libraries are not sharing.

The next meeting is on August 10th at 1 p.m.
