Minutes

Announcements

  • RDA Lab class starting next week
    • Starting Google group for people in the class
    • You should have gotten the PDF with registration info
  • FOLIO Update
    • MSU is live on FOLIO
    • Indiana suggested open source bib utility
    • Gap analysis
    • Lloyd is now convening the Consortia SIG
    • FOLIO is not all there for cataloging.  They are building two systems for managing MARC records.  There will be a complete system built in the future.  For now they have created a quick and dirty MARC editor.  There are a lot of things you can’t do with records yet.  You can’t delete records, only add them.  Editing records is difficult.
    • An interesting idea came up in a meeting we had with a consortium in Indiana.  They suggested that if FOLIO had a central cataloging app for consortia, maybe you could add together records from several consortia, and if you also added Library of Congress records, you would have an open source bib utility.  This might have to be a new project in the Open Library Foundation.
    • Marmot is starting to do a gap analysis of FOLIO, so we can assess what we need from FOLIO.  We want to gather information from everyone about what functions they need an ILS to perform.  We don’t want to think in terms of Sierra or any particular ILS, but what jobs need to be performed generally.  Brandon created a form for people to put information about the functions they need from an ILS.  Here’s the address for the form:
  • Duplicates Team Report
    • Maybe use |0 to indicate records that need authority control.
    • Currently we use CAT DATE to determine if a record has been created or updated in the last month and so needs authority control.  This is fairly loose because records could have changes that don’t effect authority control, but if the CAT DATE is updated they will go back to authority control again unnecessarily which costs us money.
    • We looked at the possibility of using the existence of subfield |0 in fields to determine that a record needs authority control or not.
    • Lloyd will continue to investigate this. << Action Item
  • Pika Cataloging Collective Report
    • Like the idea of FAST based subject faceting, SD will explore.
    • We will revise current subject faceting.
    • Suspending Pika cataloging meetings.  We will continue the Google group for email conversation.  We can call a meeting if there is something we want to talk about.

Discussion Topics

  • We need a new MUG planning representative
    • Each committee is asked to provide a person to help the planning of MUG.
    • MUG will be virtual this year, so there are many new options for how we might do it.
    • Nothing has yet been determined about when the planning meetings will occur.
  • 500 item limit in Pika is lifted, what to do about National Geographic?
    • We no longer have a limit on the number of items that can be exported from Sierra.
    • There are now three records for National Geographic because there are far too many items to export
    • There are no objections putting everyone back on a single record.
    • CMC’s items will move to the main MARC record.
    • Pika does have a limit of 1000 items that we should try to stay under.  We don’t think we have any records that will go over 1000 items even after we join these onto single MARC records.
  • New Deduping documentation
    • Discussed in Announcements
  • New process to load batches of OCLC records
    • We do a demo of the batch loading process.
    • A few records don’t overlay as expected.  They insert duplicate records.  As with many loading processes, this will require checking for duplicates.
  • Cataloging training course
    • We look at the new structure Marmot is thinking about for training.
    • We ask for input on what training they want for cataloging.
    • Mary suggests we could have separate courses for SkyRiver
    • Jamie suggests serials
      • Check-in could be serials level one
      • Captions and patterns could be a higher level.
    • Mary asks about the RDA training course and how it conflicts with some Marmot meetings.  She asks if we might move some of the Marmot meetings, so people can attend the RDA trainings.
      • We hope they will be recorded so people can watch them later.
        • We determine that the sessions will be recorded.
      • Tammy says we already have presenters scheduled so it might be hard to move meetings.
      • Discovery team is only meeting quarterly now.  Next meeting is not until September.
  • Oliver asks for an email with the gap analysis form. << Action Item
