Minutes

Announcements

  • Lloyd is working on joining the Mountain West Authority funnel. Lloyd may need an OCLC login to do this. We need to get this login approved to be a member of a funnel. Lloyd will look into what this requires.
  • Jamie is having trouble with headings reports. There are a ton of 074 duplicates that are just clutter. He would like to be able to clear it out and start over.
    • We have discussion of what headings reports can do and what people are doing with it.
    • Carol and Jamie are using it to find duplicates.
    • Nina suggests that since most people are using Tableau for finding duplicates, Carol and Jamie could clear their entries as they like and it won’t bother anyone using Tableau for duplicates.
    • Nobody objects to this change.
  • Jenn Cook is the new Cataloging Contact at Garfield
  • Another snag in my EDS export project
    • This requires automation of a function in MarcEdit that can’t currently be automated.
    • Terry Reese is looking into whether he can change this in a future version.
    • For now this project is waiting on Terry.

FOLIO Updates

  • WOLFCon in Hamburg Germany, 8/31 - 9/2, 2022
  • They are working on a new method for prioritizing work because there are too many implementers for the old method. There is a prioritization working group to develop a new process.
  • MTSU demonstrated their method for deleting records. It is actually simple to delete records. The problem is there are so many dependencies. MTSU will suppress records and tag them. Then someone checks them for dependencies before they are deleted.
  • There is a new Batch Updates SIG
  • INN-Reach is talking about reports: in-transit too long, requested too long, etc.

Discussion Topics

  • Nina will discuss how she has implemented the data clean up processes that Andy discussed at MUG
    • Nina worked with Andy Helck to develop a process using SQL to pull data from Sierra into a report she can use to easily find data problems so she can clean them up .
  • Marcive problematic subject heading service
    • The Library of Congress has finally said what they are going to do about the “Illegal aliens” subject heading. They will split it into “Noncitizens” and “Illegal immigration.” Some people still have complaints about these headings, but it seems that is what LoC is going to do.
    • Marcive has a service where they will add 650_7 into your records with alternative terms. This will allow searching on both terms and will display both terms.
      • It will change the base records.
      • Overlays from OCLC would remove these new fields, unless they were protected.
    • The other option is to pursue the Pika option.
      • This would change the display, so that you can only see the new heading, but both are still searchable.
      • This would not change the base records, or authority records.
    • Nicole asks about VuFind. Marmot is considering hosting VuFind for members who prefer it.
      • What would this mean for a library with VuFind and Pika?
      • VuFind already has the function we are considering adding to Pika, however they would function separately.
      • If we changed the base records with the Marcive method, then those changes would pass down to both Pika and VuFind.
    • Nina asks what are the drawbacks of the Marcive plan?
      • One is that the old heading the people don’t like will still show up in the public catalog.
      • However, in Pika subject headings are pretty well buried.
      • They will show up in subject faceting.
    • Lisa thinks we should keep the old terms because people will still search on the old terms.
    • Jamie finds that LoC is expected to implement this change more quickly than expected.
      • Our next quarterly authority update will be in a couple of weeks, so it probably won’t be that fast, but it sounds like it will be ready for the one after that.
    • Nicole asks if we send our whole database to Marcive every quarter, or only new records.
      • We sent our whole database to Marcive several years ago, so we only send them new records. If there are changes to any of those headings, they send us those new records quarterly.
    • Most people are supporting the idea of using the Marcive service for this issue.
    • Nina suggests that a subcommittee work on the issue of finding other terms beyond Illegal aliens that we might want to change with the Marcive service.
      • This will be a fair amount of work. Each term is likely to appear in many different ways in LCSH. Each of them has to be accounted for.
      • Many people support using the Marcive service for this function.
  • Jamie had suggested that we change the name of the duplicates team to Special Projects Team, since it has so many times worked on topics other than duplicates.
    • We decide to officially change the name of the group to Special Projects Team.
    • We decide to assign the topic of how to make use of the Marcive service to improve the inclusivity of our catalog to the special projects team.
  • UCC will meet a week early in December to avoid the holiday.
    • Our next meeting will be on December 15th.
