Minutes

Announcements

  • MLN2 catalogers will join this committee in February
  • Still meeting with MLN2 catalogers to figure out the guidelines for cataloging on their server.
  • I will be on vacation the last two weeks of January and the first week of February
  • November and December meetings?
    • We agree to meet one week early in both November and December

Discussion Topics

  • OCLC change to worldcat.org
    • Worldcat.org has changed.
    • There seems to be a grouping function, but we don't know how that works.
    • They have created a new category of "Featured libraries" and the search defaults to displaying them. You have to pay OCLC an extra fee to be in this list of featured libraries. Otherwise you are listed under "All libraries."
    • They have also removed access to MARC records, at least we can't find them.
  • Cataloging creative nonfiction discussion -- Mary Paladino
    • Mary is being asked to put picture books in non-fiction, even though they are clearly fiction.
    • The question is whether a fiction book about a theme, like grief, is so different from a non-fiction book about grief. Would shelving these in the same place help people find them.
    • Bemis library has also done this for some books. They keep the fiction cataloging and just add a dewey call number.
    • Steamboat has done something similar as well. It has been successful.
    • Systems are being built for patron self service rather than being structured for librarians.
    • Grand says their Easy section can be fiction or nonfiction.
  • Weird error message in Sierra 5.5 record loading

  • This is supposed to be fixed in 5.6.
  • 5.5 search bug
    • When a search only gets one hit you get a hit list instead of just opening the result.
    • Try switching to single window mode and back again.
    • Lloyd thought there was a work around, but we tested it and it doesn't work.
    • It seems this bug just appears randomly.
  • Import invoices issue
    • Password works for the first vendor then fails with the second vendor.
    • We found this requires you to use secure transfer when you FTP to vendors.

FOLIO Updates

  • Data Import
    • Ability to load multiple holdings and items pushed back to Poppy 23R2
    • Chicago still can't load more than 1000 records at a time
    • Chicago is working on a loading app that will break up large files and load them so they won't break FOLIO. It will have a scheduler and chunker. It will bypass FOLIO's loading app entirely.
  • Reports
    • LDP is now a separate OLF project funded by Index Data
    • MetaDB is the new version of the LDP software
    • Chicago is testing MetaDB and they like it a lot
    • MetaDB will be a direct live connection to the FOLIO database instead of a daily download
    • Theoretically it could work with other ILS
    • Wellesley is experimenting with LDLite which is another product from LDP, but I don't understand the difference between LDLite and MetaDB. They say LDLite is very hard to set up.
    • EBSCO is hosting LDP for Stanford. They would not let Stanford set up their own LDP server. I don't understand why, since it's an open software project. Maybe they will be able to set up their own MetaDB.
  • Metadata management
    • Learned that hosting providers can create an index. So if Marmot self hosts we could create our own indexes.
    • There is nothing in FOLIO to search MARC SRS directly. You can only search the Inventory app which is linked to SRS, but if that link does not work you can't get to SRS.
    • LDP can search MARC
    • Other 3rd party apps like Postman can search SRS
    • Cornell gave a demo of using Macro Express
    • Entity Management group is working again
    • The Library of Congress is very interested in linked data for entity management.
    • There is no product owner for entity management yet, but since LC is putting in a lot of resources and they are interested, it is likely to actually move.
  • Orders
    • The orders app doesn't know anything about MARC. It is based on EDI records instead
    • Lehigh created an app that converts MARC data so it can be read by the Orders app. Many others are using the Lehigh app including Chicago.
  • Other stuff
    • People are using browser extensions like Tampermonkey to customize the FOLIO interface, like removing unwanted display fields.
    • WOLFCon 2023 will be in North America.
    • Index Data is developing an app called Reservoir that will harvest records from multiple systems, dedupe them and export them to another system. It is currently being used by ReShare.
